Gratitude Determines Latitude
Gratitude determines latitude. It's a saying I became fond of over the summer. So much so, we made t-shirts! But, that's not exactly what this post is about.
Throughout my spiritual journey, I've found so many times that by simply putting love first, you can change your outlook on every situation, and often positively effect the outcome, or at a minimum, how you and those around you process that outcome. As it effects how we coexist, it was Jesus' greatest command, "love each other as you love yourself."
That's one of the keys with having gratitude, regardless of the situation, is love of yourself and just as important, those around you.
I was an only child growing up near Dallas, Texas. But, my mother, through her love, fostered 17 boys in our house, which was awesome for so many reasons--selfishly, it gave me 17 brothers that I otherwise would've never known.
Foster care has been a part of my life since I can remember, and it was one of the main reasons I started my foundation, My 10 Percent. Our mission is to help forgotten youth and give them faith and hope in a future they desire. Through our work, we've been able to provide for foster youth, as well as others left behind in our society, including homeless and victims of human trafficking.
One of the most gratify experiences for me was with one of our greatest partners, Jockey Being Family. This summer, I was able to be a part of two legal adoptions, with each family adopting a pair of foster siblings. They were given a permanent home--the desire of every foster child. My 10 Percent and Jockey Being Family were there to support them as they began their life as a new family unit.
So, Sunday, I'll wear two pairs of cleats during the NFL's My Cause My Cleats weekend. During pregame, I'll proudly wear the Jockey Being Family cleats, and during the game, I'll represent My 10 Percent. I'm so grateful for the work we've been able to do together.
Back to the t-shirt... for the rest of the season, I'm going to donate 100-percent of the proceeds for each Gratitude Determines Latitude t-shirt sold, to help local foster youth in the New York City area. Each year, there are approximately 500,000 youth in the foster care system nationwide, and there are so many ways to help--become a foster family, help mentor a foster child, donate your time and resources to a local foster home. Every little bit helps. Get your t-shirt today and join the good fight.
